The Bad News

I apologize for the lack of posting recently, but quickly after our move 3 weeks ago, G and I started to get harassed by a neighbor who is angry that a dog of her perceived "breed" moved into the building. I documented the first incident a few weeks ago, but unfortunately, despite my and the Board's best efforts, his harassment has not ceased - instead it has become more frequent, more aggressive and more troublesome.

Typically, because he is afraid (slash irate) of G, it's been verbal abuse in the hallways - disconcerting, but not unbearable - because he won't come near me if I have the dog. Last night, when I came into the building without G after work, he deliberately used his physical presence in an aggressive manor to intimidate me while I was waiting for the elevator. I had no choice but to file a police report.

I've heard some excuses for the man based on some incidents in his past and in the building: he was bitten by a dog when he was a child and there is an aggressive dog that has bitten a shareholder in the building recently (a Corgi mix). While the incidents are unfortunate, this has nothing to do with G and I and we are being targeted and harassed by someone who is clearly unhinged.

What I find ironic about the whole situation is that there is a pit mix that lives directly across the hall from him, but he chooses to loudly and aggressively harass me as a new shareholder.

Needless to say, I'm very worried for my and G's safety in the building and we are exploring all of our options. This is truly an unbelievable situation - I have never heard of anything like this happening and it's heartbreaking that our move to our own place has been marred so greatly by the actions of a lunatic.

Luckily, there are several neighbors who are aware of the situation and are disgusted by the incidents. The NYPD was extremely supportive of me when I went in yesterday and it was a relief to know that they were taking the incidents seriously.

I'm taking G home this weekend because I need some distance from the situation.

Blogosphere, any suggestions about how to handle this going forward are greatly appreciated! Your continued support means so much!!

  2. I'm so sorry to hear that is has gotten worse! Clearly this guy isn't right in the head- good for you for taking serious action. I would keep a camera/recorder with you, and begin to tape his interactions with you. He should know that his words and actions will be used against him if he should continue. I really hope things get better!

    1. I think this is an excellent idea. People are less likely to do things when there irrefutable proof available. By the way I am so sorry this is happening to you. A terrible way to break in a new home :-(

    2. This is a great idea! We are currently using the iphone as both a tape recorder and camera if he tries to come near me! We also have documented every incident, as objectively as possible, to ensure there is a paper trail.

  3. I'm so sorry. I don't have any advice, but I'm glad the police are taking the matter seriously (as they should). I hope you don't mind that I tweeted your post to my friends, in case they had any advice. Also hope you and G have a good, peaceful weekend.

  5. We hope you get some much needed rest this weekend and not have to worry about someone harassing you. Unfortunately some people can get aggressive when scared and it stinks that you are a target. But Trinity says you should just take G with you everywhere so he wont go near you and I'm sure G would love that! ;)
    Good luck & stay safe!

  6. Wow, that is just insane. It sounds like this guy is mentally unbalanced, and you are smart to have filed a police report. What is the board going to do about this? You shouldn't have to be the one to move out! Keep us posted. Much love from Chicago!

    1. I'm not sure what the Board is going to do at this point, but I hope they take swift action. Not sure how many more of these run ins we can stand!

  7. I would file a formal complaint with the board/apartment manager and let them know you feel threatened and unsafe in your own home. I would file a restraining order against this man so if he comes near you again you can have him arrested. I would read any rules that came with your housing and see if there is anyway to have him removed. Some places won't tolerate having the police called and having filed a police report may be the same as having the police called. I would document all conversations and encounters with this man. If you have an iPhone w/video recording or one of those mini video recorders the size of an iPod I would use that too. Either or both of these may be needed later.

I am so very sorry you have to deal with a stupid person. Moving into your own home should be joyful. Our prayers are with you.

    1. Thanks, Emma, this is great, great advice! We have made sure not only to cc the Board on all communications, but also the Managing Agent. If he comes near me again, I will start proceedings on a restraining order. Thanks for your thoughts!!

  8. I would tell him that his behavior has gone from inappropriate to illegal. It's awful that he doesn't understand that he won't have a problem if he and his family leave you and G alone. I completely agree with filing a formal complaint with the board, letting them know you filed a police report & documenting any encounters.
You referenced "shareholder" in your post, did you buy or are you renting? I'm curious if he is an owner or a renter as well. Hope things get better soon.

    1. We bought unfortunately, so there's no "escape" right now that wouldn't cost us hugely financially. He is an owner as well, unfortunately, so we're both sort of stuck with each other!

  9. I'm so sorry this is happening to you. You are a prisoner in your own home, which is horrible. This situation baffles me, why can't he just leave you alone? Your dog hasn't bothered him or threatened him. Why can't people just be nice to one another and mind their own business? I wish I had a solution for you, but it sounds like you are doing everything right. Let's hope he gets bored with you and moves on soon. Please keep us posted!
